1. Agonist

A substance that binds to a receptor and activates a biological response. The term describes how a compound interacts with a receptor and does not indicate regulatory approval or therapeutic benefit.

2. Albumin

The most abundant protein in human blood plasma. Albumin transports hormones, fatty acids and other molecules throughout the body and is commonly referenced in pharmacology and peptide research.

3. Amino Acid

The basic building block of proteins and peptides. Peptides are made by linking amino acids together through peptide bonds.

4. Amino Acid Sequence

The specific order of amino acids within a peptide or protein. The sequence determines the molecule’s structure and biological characteristics.

5. Analogue

A compound designed to resemble another naturally occurring molecule while differing slightly in chemical structure. Analogues are widely studied in pharmaceutical research.

6. Anabolism

The collection of metabolic processes that build complex molecules from simpler ones. Anabolism is a normal biological process involved in growth and tissue maintenance.

7. Anabolic Hormone

A hormone involved in supporting normal tissue growth and maintenance. The term refers to biological function rather than therapeutic use.

8. Antagonist

A substance that binds to a receptor without activating it, thereby reducing or blocking a biological response.

9. Antibody

A protein produced by the immune system that recognises specific foreign substances known as antigens.

10. Antigen

A substance capable of triggering an immune response. Antigens may be naturally occurring or synthetic.

11. Apoptosis

A normal process of programmed cell death that helps maintain healthy tissues by removing damaged or unnecessary cells.

12. Assay

A laboratory test used to measure or identify the presence, concentration or activity of a biological substance.

13. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

The primary energy-carrying molecule used by cells for biological processes.

14. Autoimmune Response

An immune response directed against the body’s own tissues. This glossary entry describes a biological concept only.

15. Affinity

The strength with which a molecule binds to a receptor or other biological target.

16. Batch Testing

Quality control procedures used to verify that manufactured products meet predetermined specifications before release.

17. Bioactive Peptide

A peptide capable of interacting with biological systems. The term does not indicate approved therapeutic use.

18. Bioavailability

The proportion of a substance that reaches systemic circulation after administration. Bioavailability varies depending on the substance and route of administration.

19. Biochemistry

The scientific study of chemical processes occurring within living organisms.

20. Biomarker

A measurable biological characteristic used in research or clinical assessment to indicate normal biological processes or responses.

21. Biopharmaceutical

A medicinal product produced using biological sources or biotechnology rather than traditional chemical synthesis.

22. Biosynthesis

The natural process through which living organisms produce biological molecules, including proteins and peptides.

23. Biotechnology

The application of biological systems, living organisms or cellular processes to develop products and technologies.

24. Bioequivalence

A scientific comparison used to determine whether two products perform similarly under specified testing conditions.

25. Buffer Solution

A solution that helps maintain a stable pH during laboratory procedures or manufacturing.

26. Binding Site

The specific location where a molecule attaches to a receptor, enzyme or protein.

27. Binding Affinity

A measurement describing how strongly a molecule binds to its biological target.

28. Biological Activity

The measurable interaction of a substance with living cells or biological systems.

29. Biostability

The ability of a molecule to remain chemically stable within a biological environment.

30. Batch Number

A unique identifier assigned during manufacturing to assist with product traceability and quality assurance.

31. Carrier Protein

A protein responsible for transporting molecules throughout the body or across cell membranes.

32. Cell Membrane

The protective outer layer surrounding a cell that regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell.

33. Cell Signalling

The communication process through which cells exchange information using chemical messengers and receptors.

34. Cellular Receptor

A specialised protein that recognises and binds specific signalling molecules.

35. Chemical Stability

The ability of a substance to maintain its chemical structure under defined conditions.

36. Chromatography

A laboratory technique used to separate, identify and analyse components within a mixture.

37. Clinical Research

Systematic scientific investigation involving human participants conducted under regulatory and ethical oversight.

38. Cofactor

A non-protein molecule or mineral required for the normal function of certain enzymes.

39. Collagen Peptide

Short chains of amino acids derived from collagen proteins. The term describes composition only and does not imply health benefits.

40. Compound

A substance composed of two or more chemical elements chemically bonded together.

41. Conformation

The three-dimensional shape adopted by a molecule, which may influence how it interacts with biological targets.

42. Contaminant

An unintended substance present within a material or product.

43. Culture Medium

A nutrient-rich solution used to grow cells or microorganisms under laboratory conditions.

44. Cytokine

A signalling protein produced by cells that assists communication within the immune system.

45. Cytoplasm

The gel-like material inside a cell that surrounds organelles and supports many cellular activities.

46. Cytotoxicity

The ability of a substance to damage or affect cells under laboratory testing conditions. Cytotoxicity assessments are commonly performed during research and product development.

47. Circular Peptide

A peptide whose amino acid chain forms a continuous loop rather than having free ends. Circular peptides are studied for their structural stability.

48. C-Terminus

The end of a peptide or protein chain containing the free carboxyl group. It is commonly referenced when describing peptide structure.

49. Cross-Linking

The formation of chemical bonds between molecules or within different parts of the same molecule, affecting structural properties.

50. Cell Culture

The laboratory practice of growing cells under controlled conditions for scientific research and testing.

51. Degradation

The natural breakdown of a molecule through chemical, biological or environmental processes. Factors such as temperature, light and moisture can influence degradation.

52. Denaturation

A structural change in a protein or peptide caused by physical or chemical conditions that may alter its normal characteristics.

53. Dipeptide

A peptide consisting of two amino acids joined by a single peptide bond.

54. Disulfide Bond

A strong chemical bond formed between two sulfur-containing amino acids that helps stabilise the three-dimensional structure of many proteins and peptides.

55. Dissolution

The process by which a substance dissolves in a liquid to form a solution.

56. Distribution

The movement of a substance throughout the body’s tissues after it enters systemic circulation. This is a pharmacological term describing biological processes.

57. DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)

The hereditary material found in nearly all living organisms that contains genetic information.

58. Dose Form

The physical form in which a product is manufactured, such as a tablet, capsule, solution or powder. The term does not imply approved use.

59. Double-Blind Study

A research design in which neither participants nor investigators know who receives the intervention or comparison treatment during the study.

60. Drug Development

The scientific and regulatory process of researching, evaluating and, where appropriate, seeking approval for new medicinal products.

61. Dynamic Equilibrium

A state in which biological processes continue to occur while overall balance is maintained.

62. Downregulation

A decrease in the number or activity of receptors or other cellular components in response to biological signals.

63. Drug Substance

The active chemical or biological ingredient intended for further manufacturing into a finished product.

64. Drug Product

The finished manufactured product containing one or more active ingredients together with any inactive components.

65. Diffusion

The passive movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

66. Diagnostic Biomarker

A measurable biological indicator used in research or healthcare to assist in evaluating biological processes or conditions.

67. Efficacy

A scientific term describing the extent to which an intervention produces a measured outcome under defined study conditions. Regulatory approval depends on extensive evidence.

68. Electrolyte

A mineral that carries an electrical charge when dissolved in water and contributes to normal physiological processes.

69. Endocrine System

The collection of glands that produce hormones involved in regulating numerous body functions.

70. Endogenous

Originating naturally within the body.

71. Enzyme

A biological catalyst that accelerates chemical reactions within living organisms.

72. Enzyme Activity

The measurable rate at which an enzyme catalyses a chemical reaction.

73. Enzyme Inhibitor

A substance that decreases or blocks the activity of a specific enzyme.

74. Epitope

The specific region of an antigen recognised by an antibody or immune cell.

75. Exogenous

Originating from outside the body.

76. Excipients

Inactive ingredients used during manufacturing to assist with formulation, stability or delivery of a finished product.

77. Expression

The biological process through which genetic information is used to produce proteins or other functional molecules.

78. Extracellular

Located outside a cell.

79. Endoplasmic Reticulum

A network within cells involved in the production, folding and transport of proteins and other molecules.

80. Equilibrium

A balanced state in which opposing biological or chemical processes occur at equal rates.

81. ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay)

A commonly used laboratory technique for detecting and measuring proteins, antibodies or other biological molecules.

82. Evidence-Based Research

Scientific investigation conducted using established research methods designed to minimise bias and improve reliability.

83. FDA (Food and Drug Administration)

The United States government agency responsible for regulating medicines, medical devices, biologics and certain food products.

84. TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration)

Australia’s regulatory authority responsible for the assessment and regulation of therapeutic goods.

85. Fermentation

A biological process in which microorganisms produce substances under controlled conditions. Fermentation is widely used in biotechnology.

86. Filtration

A manufacturing or laboratory process used to remove particles or microorganisms from liquids or gases.

87. Finished Product

A manufactured product that has completed all production and quality control processes.

88. Formulation

The combination of active and inactive ingredients used to create a finished product.

89. Freeze-Drying (Lyophilisation)

A preservation process that removes water from a material under low temperature and vacuum conditions to improve stability during storage.

90. Folding

The process through which a protein or peptide adopts its functional three-dimensional structure.

91. Functional Domain

A specific region of a protein responsible for a particular biological function.

92. Fragment

A portion of a larger protein or peptide that has been separated naturally or through laboratory techniques.

93. Free Radical

An unstable molecule capable of reacting with other molecules because it contains an unpaired electron.

94. Full-Length Protein

A complete protein containing its entire naturally occurring amino acid sequence.

95. First-Pass Metabolism

The metabolic processing of certain substances by the liver and digestive system before they enter systemic circulation.

96. Fluorescence Assay

A laboratory method that uses fluorescent markers to detect or measure biological molecules.

97. Functional Protein

A protein that has achieved its correctly folded structure and performs a biological role within an organism.

98. Fractionation

The laboratory process of separating complex mixtures into individual components based on their physical or chemical properties.

99. Food-Grade

A classification indicating that a material meets standards for intended food-related applications. It does not imply suitability for therapeutic use.

100. Freeze–Thaw Cycle

The repeated freezing and thawing of a material, which may influence its physical or chemical characteristics during storage or research.

101. Gene

A segment of DNA that contains the instructions for producing a specific protein or functional RNA molecule.

102. Gene Expression

The biological process by which genetic information is used to produce proteins or other functional molecules.

103. Gene Regulation

The mechanisms that control when, where and how genes are expressed within cells.

104. Genetic Code

The set of biological instructions that determines how sequences of DNA and RNA are translated into proteins.

105. Genome

The complete collection of an organism’s genetic material.

106. Genomics

The scientific study of genomes, including gene structure, function and interactions.

107. Gland

An organ that produces and releases hormones, enzymes or other substances required for normal physiological function.

108. GLP (Good Laboratory Practice)

An internationally recognised quality system governing the planning, conduct, monitoring and reporting of laboratory studies.

109. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)

A quality assurance system designed to ensure products are consistently manufactured and controlled according to established standards.

110. GPCR (G Protein-Coupled Receptor)

A large family of cell surface receptors involved in transmitting signals from outside the cell to its interior.

111. Growth Factor

A naturally occurring signalling protein that participates in regulating normal cellular processes such as growth, communication and repair.

112. Glycine

The smallest naturally occurring amino acid and one of the building blocks of proteins and peptides.

113. Glycoprotein

A protein containing one or more carbohydrate chains attached during normal cellular processing.

114. Glycosylation

A normal biological process in which carbohydrate molecules are attached to proteins or lipids, influencing their structure and function.

115. Gradient

A gradual difference in concentration, pressure or another measurable property that influences molecular movement.

116. Granule

A small particle or storage structure within a cell that contains proteins, hormones or other biological substances.

117. Half-Life

The time required for the amount or concentration of a substance to decrease by approximately half under defined conditions.

118. Heat Stability

The ability of a substance to maintain its structure and characteristics when exposed to elevated temperatures.

119. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

A laboratory analytical technique used to separate, identify and quantify compounds within a sample.

120. Homeostasis

The body’s ability to maintain a relatively stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions.

121. Hormone

A chemical messenger produced by endocrine glands that helps regulate normal physiological processes.

122. Hormone Receptor

A specialised protein that recognises and binds a specific hormone to initiate a biological response.

123. Human Peptide

A peptide naturally produced within the human body or designed to have the same amino acid sequence as a naturally occurring human peptide.

124. Hybrid Peptide

A peptide created by combining sequences from two or more different peptide structures for research purposes.

125. Hydrophilic

Describes a molecule that readily interacts with or dissolves in water.

126. Hydrophobic

Describes a molecule that tends to repel water or has limited water solubility.

127. Hydrolysis

A chemical reaction in which water breaks chemical bonds, including peptide bonds under certain conditions.

128. Homology

The degree of similarity between genes, proteins or peptide sequences resulting from shared evolutionary origins.

129. Host Cell

A cell used in research or manufacturing to produce biological molecules through biotechnology techniques.

130. Histidine

An essential amino acid involved in protein synthesis and numerous biological processes.

131. Helix

A spiral-shaped structural feature commonly found within proteins.

132. High Purity

A term indicating that a material contains a high proportion of the intended substance following analytical testing. The term does not indicate suitability for therapeutic use.

133. Immune System

The network of cells, tissues and organs that helps protect the body from foreign substances and microorganisms.

134. Immunity

The body’s ability to recognise and respond to foreign substances through coordinated biological processes.

135. Immunogenicity

The ability of a substance to stimulate an immune response under specific biological conditions.

136. Immunoassay

A laboratory test that uses antibodies to detect or measure specific biological molecules.

137. Inactive Ingredient

A component included in a formulation that does not provide the primary intended biological activity but assists manufacturing or stability.

138. In Silico

Research or analysis performed using computer modelling or computational simulation.

139. In Vitro

Research conducted outside a living organism, typically using laboratory equipment, cultured cells or isolated biological materials.

140. In Vivo

Research conducted within a living organism under controlled scientific conditions.

141. Incubation

Maintaining biological materials under controlled environmental conditions to support observation or experimentation.

142. Indicator

A measurable characteristic used to assess or monitor a biological or chemical process.

143. Integrity

The extent to which a molecule maintains its intended chemical structure without degradation or contamination.

144. Insulin

A naturally occurring hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate glucose metabolism.

145. Insulin-Like Growth Factor (IGF)

A naturally occurring protein involved in normal growth and development. The term describes a biological molecule and does not imply therapeutic application.

146. Intercellular

Occurring or existing between neighbouring cells.

147. Intracellular

Located or occurring within a cell.

148. Ion

An atom or molecule carrying a positive or negative electrical charge.

149. Ionic Bond

A chemical attraction between oppositely charged ions that contributes to molecular interactions.

150. Isoform

One of several closely related versions of the same protein that may arise through normal biological processes such as alternative gene expression.

151. Journal

A peer-reviewed scientific publication that presents original research, reviews or technical information in a specific field of study.

152. Journal Article

A published scientific paper describing research methods, findings or reviews that have typically undergone peer review before publication.

153. Junction Protein

A protein that helps connect neighbouring cells and maintain the structural integrity of tissues.

154. Juxtacrine Signalling

A form of cell communication that occurs through direct contact between adjacent cells.

155. JNK (c-Jun N-terminal Kinase)

A member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family involved in normal cellular signalling and stress-response pathways.

156. Justification

The documented scientific reasoning supporting a research method, study design or manufacturing decision.

157. Joint Tissue

A collective term for the cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone and connective tissues that contribute to joint structure and movement.

158. Joule

The International System (SI) unit used to measure energy, including energy involved in biological and chemical processes.

159. Juvenile Protein Expression

A research term describing proteins or genes that are predominantly expressed during early stages of growth or development.

160. Java-Based Laboratory Information System

A laboratory information management platform developed using the Java programming language to assist with research data management. The term is used in laboratory informatics rather than peptide biology.

161. Kinase

An enzyme that transfers phosphate groups to proteins or other molecules as part of normal cellular signalling.

162. Kinase Pathway

A sequence of enzyme-driven signalling events that regulates communication within cells.

163. Kinetics

The study of the rate at which chemical or biological processes occur.

164. Kinetic Stability

The ability of a molecule to resist structural change over time under defined conditions.

165. Knockout Model

A research model in which one or more genes have been intentionally inactivated to study biological function.

166. Knock-In Model

A research model in which a gene or genetic sequence has been intentionally inserted into an organism for scientific investigation.

167. Km (Michaelis Constant)

A biochemical measurement describing the relationship between an enzyme and its substrate during enzyme activity studies.

168. KDa (Kilodalton)

A unit of molecular mass commonly used to describe the size of proteins and peptides.

169. Keratin

A structural protein found in skin, hair and nails that contributes to their strength and durability.

170. Krebs Cycle

Also known as the citric acid cycle, a series of biochemical reactions involved in normal cellular energy production.

171. Karyotype

The complete set of chromosomes within a cell, examined to evaluate chromosome number and structure.

172. Kappa Statistic

A statistical measurement used to evaluate agreement between observers or analytical methods in scientific research.

173. Knowledge Translation

The process of communicating scientific evidence in a way that supports understanding and appropriate application within research, healthcare or policy.

174. Kinetic Profile

A description of how the concentration or behaviour of a substance changes over time under defined experimental conditions.

175. Key Performance Indicator (KPI)

A measurable benchmark used in laboratory, manufacturing or quality systems to evaluate performance against established objectives.

177. Laboratory Standard

A documented procedure or specification used to promote consistency, accuracy and quality during research or manufacturing.

178. Ligand

179. Ligand Binding

The process through which a ligand attaches to its biological target.

180. Ligand Affinity

A measurement describing the strength of interaction between a ligand and its receptor or target molecule.

181. Ligand Specificity

The tendency of a ligand to bind preferentially to particular receptors or molecular targets.

182. Linear Peptide

A peptide composed of a continuous amino acid chain with distinct amino (N) and carboxyl (C) termini.

183. Lipid

A diverse group of naturally occurring molecules including fats, oils and phospholipids that contribute to cell structure and energy storage.

184. Lipophilic

Describes a substance that readily dissolves in fats or oils rather than water.

185. Liposome

A microscopic spherical structure composed of lipid bilayers commonly used in laboratory research and pharmaceutical formulation studies.

186. Lyophilisation

A freeze-drying process used to remove water from biological materials under vacuum to assist stability during storage.

187. Leucine

An essential amino acid involved in normal protein synthesis and cellular function.

188. Lysine

An essential amino acid required for normal protein production and numerous biological processes.

189. Loading Dose

A pharmacological term describing an initial amount administered to rapidly achieve a target concentration. The term is included for educational purposes only and does not imply clinical use or recommendations.

190. Longitudinal Study

A scientific study that follows participants, samples or observations over an extended period to assess changes over time.

191. Limit of Detection (LOD)

The smallest quantity of a substance that can be reliably detected using a validated analytical method.

192. Limit of Quantification (LOQ)

The lowest concentration of a substance that can be measured with acceptable accuracy and precision.

193. Lot Number

A unique identifier assigned to a manufacturing batch to support quality assurance and traceability.

194. Label Claim

The stated identity or characteristics of a product as presented on its approved label, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.

195. Localised Expression

The production of a protein or gene product within a specific tissue, organ or region of the body.

196. Library Screening

A laboratory process used to evaluate large collections of compounds or molecules to identify those with specified research characteristics.

197. Ligase

An enzyme that joins two molecules together by forming a new chemical bond.

198. Loading Buffer

A laboratory solution used to prepare samples for analytical techniques such as gel electrophoresis.

199. Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

A software platform used to organise laboratory workflows, sample tracking, analytical results and quality documentation.

200. Life Cycle

The sequence of stages through which a biological molecule, cell, organism or manufactured product progresses from creation through to degradation, disposal or completion.

201. Macromolecule

A large biological molecule, such as a protein, nucleic acid or polysaccharide, composed of many smaller molecular units.

202. Mass Spectrometry (MS)

An analytical laboratory technique used to identify compounds by measuring their molecular mass and structure.

203. Matrix

The physical or chemical environment surrounding cells, tissues or laboratory samples.

204. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation (MALDI)

A mass spectrometry technique commonly used to analyse proteins and peptides.

205. Membrane Protein

A protein located within or attached to a cell membrane that contributes to transport, signalling or structural support.

206. Messenger RNA (mRNA)

A molecule that carries genetic instructions from DNA to cellular structures responsible for protein synthesis.

207. Metabolism

The collection of chemical reactions that sustain life by producing energy and building or breaking down biological molecules.

208. Metabolite

A substance produced during normal metabolic processes.

209. Metabolic Pathway

A sequence of interconnected biochemical reactions occurring within living cells.

210. Microbiology

The scientific study of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microscopic life forms.

211. Micromolar (µM)

A unit of concentration commonly used in laboratory and biochemical research.

212. Molecular Biology

The scientific study of biological molecules and their interactions within living organisms.

213. Molecular Mass

The total mass of all atoms contained within a molecule.

214. Molecular Structure

The three-dimensional arrangement of atoms within a molecule.

215. Monoclonal Antibody

A laboratory-produced antibody designed to recognise a single specific target molecule.

216. Monomer

A small molecular unit capable of joining with others to form larger biological molecules.

217. Motif

A recurring structural or functional pattern found within proteins or peptides.

218. Mutation

A permanent alteration in a DNA sequence that may or may not affect biological function.

219. Manufacturing Batch

A defined quantity of material produced during a single manufacturing process under consistent conditions.

220. Molecular Docking

A computer-based modelling technique used to predict how molecules may interact with biological targets.

221. Nanomolar (nM)

A unit of concentration representing one billionth of a mole per litre, frequently used in biochemical research.

222. Nanotechnology

The science and engineering of materials and structures at the nanometre scale.

223. Native Peptide

A peptide existing in its naturally occurring form.

224. Natural Peptide

A peptide produced naturally by living organisms.

225. N-Terminus

The end of a peptide or protein chain containing the free amino group.

226. Nuclear Receptor

A receptor located within cells that regulates gene expression after binding specific signalling molecules.

227. Nucleic Acid

A biological molecule, such as DNA or RNA, responsible for storing and transmitting genetic information.

228. Nucleotide

The basic building block of DNA and RNA.

229. Nucleus

The membrane-bound structure within most cells that contains genetic material.

230. Neutralisation

A chemical or biological process that reduces or eliminates the activity of a substance under defined conditions.

231. Nonclinical Research

Scientific studies conducted before human clinical trials, often involving laboratory or animal research.

232. Nutrient

A substance required for normal growth, maintenance and biological function.

233. Nutritional Biochemistry

The study of how nutrients interact with biological systems.

234. Nitrogen Balance

A measurement comparing nitrogen intake with nitrogen loss to assess protein metabolism.

235. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)

Advanced DNA sequencing technology used to rapidly analyse genetic material.

236. Oligopeptide

A short chain of amino acids, generally containing between two and twenty amino acid residues.

237. Omics

A collective term describing scientific fields such as genomics, proteomics and metabolomics that study large groups of biological molecules.

238. On-Target Activity

The interaction of a molecule with its intended biological target under research conditions.

239. Off-Target Activity

Interaction of a molecule with unintended biological targets during research or testing.

240. Open Reading Frame (ORF)

A DNA or RNA sequence capable of being translated into a protein.

241. Organ Culture

The maintenance of whole organs or tissue sections under laboratory conditions for research.

242. Organic Compound

A chemical compound primarily composed of carbon atoms.

243. Osmosis

The movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from lower to higher solute concentration.

244. Oxidation

A chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons that may alter the structure or stability of molecules.

245. Oxidative Stress

A biological condition in which reactive molecules exceed the body’s antioxidant capacity under specific circumstances.

246. Pathway

A sequence of biological or chemical reactions that contribute to a cellular process.

247. Peptide

A molecule composed of two or more amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Peptides vary widely in length, structure and biological role.

248. Peptide Bond
